If you are a lesbian couple who are thinking about having a family through donor conception, or who have decided this is definitely the route you want to follow, then these sessions are for you.
You may still be at an early stage, having fertility treatment or have become pregnant. (If you already have a child through donor conception, please follow the link at the bottom of this page to find out about our Telling and Talking workshops). The sessions are open to DCN members and non-members alike.
'The facilitator was fantastic with approachability and we both felt very supported.'
Who runs the sessions?
This session offers you the opportunity to talk with a DCN facilitator who is themselves a parent through donor conception. All our facilitators bring personal and professional skills and are experienced in working with individuals and groups who are at the stage of making important decisions about their future, and whether donor conception is the right way forward for them.
We’ve been offered a counselling session at our clinic. What’s different about DCN’s sessions?
We definitely recommends taking up any offers of clinic implications counselling you are offered.
Additionally, our One to One Session offers perspectives based on:
Our own long-term parenting experience
Talking to many hundreds of people considering donor conception or bringing up their children in many different family situations
Conversations with many donor-conceived adults with widely different experiences of how they feel about being donor-conceived
Continuous learning from professional and personal accounts and research studies
Running workshops for children at our conferences (the first in the world to do so)
DCN was founded in 1993 with the aim of offering support to parents and would-be parents in being honest with their children about their donor-conceived origins. We offer services both to members and non-members - have a look at our website at the variety of information, personal stories and news related to donor conception.
What are the sessions about?
You will be able to explore your concerns, hopes and fears with your facilitator in a non-judgemental and empathetic way. DCN is an independent body and not linked to any clinics, so the sessions are completely confidential. The 2 hour main session is designed to ensure you have plenty of time to talk through every topic you would like to know more about, so it will be personal to you. A follow-up session is included, which is optional but recommended. This gives you the opportunity to talk over any further questions and reflections from your first session. We suggest it is most useful any time up to a month after the first session.
The sessions will be guided by your priorities and our experience of topics that couples commonly find helpful. Here are some examples to get you thinking:
What it means to create your family using a donor
You may have decided already that this is the path you are going to take but want to understand more about how this will impact you and others, or you may still be wondering about how to make a decision
What it means for the non-birth mother
Dealing with reactions from family, friends and colleagues and how to gain support. How to talk about it - language and terminology can be confusing
How to choose a donor and the implications of both known and unknown donors and where co-parenting agreements might be useful
Thinking about being a same sex family, and how donor conception fits into this in the long term
How much do they cost?
Main session and follow up is £270.
If the main session is face to face, then there is an additional fee of £50 to cover the additional venue hire.
How do I book?
Usually the most convenient way to organise the sessions is by Skype, Zoom or FaceTime. This will be arranged at a mutually agreed time, and enables you to feel more relaxed in your own home. Alternatively, it may be possible to organise a face to face session, depending on your location. One session lasts around 2 hours. It’s really important that both of you attend the session, in order to get the maximum benefit. There is a follow up session of 1 hour included to be taken within one month of your first session if you require further information. Please note these sessions are one to one with both of you and your facilitator.
If you would like to book a session, please fill in this form below and we will contact you.
